An OECD report on progress in the EU Coordinated Plan on Artificial Intelligence says medical imaging is considered one of the most advanced areas of AI in EU healthcare, in both research and clinical deployment.

It notes that German radiology departments have adopted AI largely hospital by hospital, and that Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin became the first German hospital to implement a comprehensive AI radiology platform in 2021, using a suite that flags time-critical findings such as brain bleeds and pulmonary emboli. In the Netherlands, five hospitals pooled resources to evaluate and co-deploy AI systems.

The report also highlights European imaging companies, including Copenhagen-based Radiobotics for fracture detection on X-rays and Estonia-based Better Medicine for multi-organ cancer imaging.
